Editors' ReviewDownload.com staffApril 22, 2014Previously an iOS-only app that has now become available for Android, Solar Walk Free features a beautiful and engaging 3D model of the solar system. The free version we tested is limited to the exploration of Saturn and its moons, while the paid version includes the complete solar system, plus some comets and galaxies.ProsBeautiful immersive graphics and animations: Solar Walk Free impressed us with the high quality of its graphics and animations, which displayed beautifully on our mobile device, providing a high level of detail. We especially enjoyed planet movement in accelerated time mode of hours, days, or years.Informative: The app provides easy to digest descriptions, a wealth of space body numerical and compositional data, and great comparisons between planets or moons. All this info is served in a space museum fashion and can easily provide the basis for a school course on the solar system.ConsDifficult touch navigation: The touch interface took some getting used to, so much so that we found it easier to access different bodies directly from the menus. Kids shouldn't have too many troubles with the touch mode, though.Slow installation: At 299MB we are talking about a larger-than-average app that takes several minutes to install via Wi-Fi.Lazy startup: Launching the app took almost one minute on our Samsung Galaxy S3.Bottom LineWith its wonderful graphics and comprehensive information, Solar Walk Free ends up being an attractive app for those who want a quality presentation of the solar system or love space in general. It can comfortably serve as an educational tool for kids and adults. Judging from the free version, we definitely recommend spending $2.10 for the full version.
