Editors' ReviewDownload.com staffJune 22, 2004If you're looking for a free way to sharpen your vocabulary skills for an impending standardized test, this program can be an invaluable resource. Though Vocabulary Builder Simple isn't a touchstone of modern design, the two-pane interface is a snap to understand and displays simple instructions. In the top window, you'll find a word and a list of five possible definitions. Once you've made your selection, the bottom window tells you whether you're correct. If you are, you can exclude the word from further testing by marking it as mastered. If you're not, Vocabulary Builder Simple gives you the right answer. The program can randomly quiz you on a selection of terms from its 4,800-word database, or you can choose one of three difficulty levels, although very few terms are classified as hard. While you're testing, the software tracks your progress and eventually gives you a grade. You'll also find a dictionary, although there aren't really any other features to speak of. Since this program doesn't cost a dime to use, we think most test takers should give this study aid a shot.
