Editors' ReviewDownload.com staffJanuary 16, 2006This nifty utility uses the Microsoft speech engine to transform text into MP3, WAV, WMA, MP4, or OGG audio files, as well as the less common VOX, AU, and AIFF formats. The majority of users will have no problem figuring out the clear and direct interface, most of which comprises a large box for entering text. You can easily change the reading speed, the volume, the pitch, and the bit rate, and you can choose from about a dozen male and female voices. We like that the program can read 10 languages, making it helpful to a wide range of people. You also can add a human element to the reading by adding pauses for lengths you determine, though we're not sure how often people might go to the trouble. We particularly like the addition of hot keys to help the visually impaired. You'll also find a basic text editor comparable to the one offered by Microsoft Word and an integrated Web browser. Though very simple, this program will be useful to children learning to read and to the visually impaired.
