In Close Approach, your simple task is to destroy an asteroid, which breaks into smaller and smaller pieces the more you shoot it. The game lets you command your ship from the first-person view, but we initially had problems even figuring out how to play. No matter whether we tried maneuvering our spacecraft with the mouse or the keyboard, the game kept tell us we weren't inside the containment field. After some wrangling, we eventually got to the point where we could blast away at the asteroids and began to enjoy ourselves. For a game that consumes only 2MB, Close Approach has decent music and graphics, but its feature set may be its strongest point. You can customize the game by choosing the difficulty level, setting the graphics quality, specifying ship movement style, and disabling the audio. Although its learning curve may be a little too steep for casual gamers, more experienced folks might find this program worth a try.
