Editors' ReviewDownload.com staffMay 15, 2012Plenty of things are sadder than a plain Facebook page; spilled milk, for instance, or paper cuts. But why risk even that modicum of sorrow when it's so easy to personalize your space? With free tools like Better Facebook for Firefox, it's easy to create a memorable look and a custom feel for your Facebook page. This extension adds feed filters, tabbed news, a static header bar, enhanced navigation, a friend tracker, and the ability to hide read posts, and it also lets you hide features you don't want or need, such as the "Lightbox," and even restores some changes that some users didn't like.We logged on to Facebook to start Better Facebook's 10-step setup wizard, which walked us through each of its options with clear explanations and illustrations. These options can be changed later from Better Facebook's tabbed toolbar, which itself is an optional feature. Among the options we could select were showing full images when hovering over a thumbnail, adding Reply links to comments, and floating the reply box above comments; changing the Enter key's behavior; restoring the old Comments button; hiding stuff we didn't want displayed; and even setting a Power Off button that disables all of the extension's features (which requires restarting Firefox). Another welcome option is themes, which the developer claims will be added regularly. The small default selection included some nice choices, especially the Dark Shiny themes. Nearly every option in Better Facebook is a simple check box, so it's just as easy to undo or change a setting as it is to make one. As we noted, this extension offers plenty of assistance along the way.Better Facebook for Firefox is not only a good description of this tool's results, it's a good assessment of its performance as a browser extension. It's by far the most flexible and feature-packed Facebook enhancement we've seen, and the most useful one, too.
